Ibiza growth must have limits, Costa tells Parliament
Ibiza cannot keep growing without limits, Antoni Costa told Parliament on Tuesday, pointing to the island’s vehicle cap and the government’s refusal to support what he called unchecked expansion at Ibiza Airport. The Balearic Islands’ deputy president said Ibiza was a fragile, limited territory that could not expand forever. He said the Island Council of Ibiza was already following that model.
The exchange came after socialist MP Álex Pitaluga challenged the government’s plans for the island. Pitaluga attacked its urban-planning amnesty, saying it was being used to legalise large properties on rural land and was driving luxury development, heavy use of land and water, and gains for a small number of people.
Costa also returned to the row over the 532 subsidised homes at Ca n’Escandell. He said they would be for people who had lived on Ibiza for five years, in line with the current housing law approved by Parliament.
He accused the PSOE of taking conflicting positions on Ibiza Airport. Costa said an expansion was being planned through Aena while the party was also set to demonstrate against the project on Sunday.
