Ibiza afternoon classes cancelled as heavy rain nears

Afternoon classes are cancelled on Ibiza and Formentera on 17 September as heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast in the coming hours. Families who can are being asked to collect their children early from school. Children whose families cannot get there sooner can remain at school for as long as needed, with the authorities stressing that the buildings are safe spaces.

The Directorate General of Emergencies said the move was a precaution ahead of the worsening weather. It has urged people to take care and to call 112 in urgent cases.

Emergency director Pablo Gárriz said Ibiza had already recorded 20 l/m2 of rain. “The situation requires us to act in advance,” he said, while seeking to reassure parents unable to reach schools early.
