Ibiza housing crisis: minister targets holiday lets

More than 530 homes are planned across three plots at Ca n’Escandell in Ibiza, but Housing Minister Isabel Rodríguez says building alone will not solve the island’s housing crisis. On 17 September, she called for rules on holiday lets and purchases by foreign investors.

Rodríguez said the problem was “very serious”. The government will support the authorities responsible for building a stock of public housing with funding and effort, she said.

The Ministry is ready to sign a cooperation agreement for plot 10 at Ca n’Escandell, aimed at moving the work forward so the planned homes can become available as soon as possible.

Urbanisation work at the site still needs to be completed. However, two building projects are already ready to start once municipal licences are granted.

Rodríguez said the scheme had a long history and that the final stage of the work must now take priority. Ca n’Escandell represented the kind of neighbourhood and city her ministry wanted to support, she said: one that puts living and coexistence first.

She warned that even major investment in public housing would not end the imbalance if large funds were able to buy up the whole island.
