Ibiza lizard refuge sparks €6,000 fine proposal
Ibiza, Balearic Islands: the people behind a private lizard refuge face a proposed €6,000 fine. The Balearic Government has opened a penalty case against them. Jaime Díaz de Entresotos, a Vox member of Ibiza’s island council, criticised the move on 6 November.
Invasive snakes threaten the island’s lizards. Vox says the authorities give landowners traps to catch snakes on their properties, but tell them they cannot set up spaces to protect the lizards. Díaz de Entresotos argues that lizard protection should not be limited to public facilities.
Vox wants rules that would allow private refuges under technical supervision, with measures to keep snakes out and protect the lizards. The party says citizens’ groups have also backed the idea. Díaz de Entresotos has called on the Balearic Government to work with landowners and organisations involved in protecting the island’s lizards.
