Ibiza candidate calls for fewer tourists and more homes

Fewer tourists, affordable housing and stronger public services are at the centre of Álvaro de la Fuente’s Podemos primary bid for the Consell d’Eivissa on 16 September.

De la Fuente, a councillor and Unidas Podemos spokesman at Santa Eulària des Riu Town Hall on Ibiza, wants to become the party’s candidate for the island council. Podemos said his campaign is built around social justice, housing and protecting the island.

He puts Ibiza’s housing emergency among its biggest problems. Public policy, he argues, must stop a speculative model that makes homes harder to reach for residents, young people and older people.

De la Fuente said housing and water should no longer be treated as business opportunities while thousands of residents see their chance of a dignified life under threat. He wants economic and land-use policies to help people who live and work on Ibiza build their lives there.

His other central demand is tourism degrowth — in everyday terms, reducing visitor numbers rather than allowing them to keep rising. He says the island has reached the limit of a model based on constant growth, with consequences for housing, natural resources and residents’ quality of life.

The candidate also wants island-level social services to become more firmly public and to tackle insecure conditions in a sector he describes as vital to social cohesion. Care and support for vulnerable people should be at the heart of institutional work, he says.

De la Fuente has been a Podemos member since 2020 and has focused his political work on labour rights, housing access and environmental protection.
