Ibiza rent protest: tenants demand open-ended deals

Tenants will gather in Eivissa, Ibiza, on Sunday to back Maricarmen, an elderly woman evicted in Madrid, and demand open-ended rental agreements. The protest starts at 18.00 at Vara de Rey. It is part of a series of actions planned across Spain.

The Tenant Union of Eivissa says the rally will also highlight what it calls the “police violence” faced by volunteers and activists who tried to stop Maricarmen’s eviction peacefully.

The group wants structural measures to prevent evictions, a change to rental law covering seasonal lets and room rentals, and a freeze on current rents. It also calls for effective extensions and automatic renewal of every contract, turning them into open-ended agreements.

According to the union, the strong public response to Maricarmen’s case has pushed political figures to react and negotiate a housing decree due to be voted on next Tuesday. It is calling for people to fill the streets, while demanding action from political parties and a general strike from trade unions.
