100 mm storm warning: Ibiza halts outdoor sport
Outdoor sport, competitions and training are off in Santa Eulària des Riu, Ibiza, on Wednesday 9 September as up to 100 mm of rain is forecast within 12 hours. Sports sessions involving under-18s have also been cancelled. The town hall has activated its Municipal Emergency Plan, known as PEMU.
The forecast includes as much as 40 mm of rain in one hour, heavy thunderstorms, intense showers, gusts above 90 km/h and possible hail. In some places, the predicted 12-hour rainfall total could fall in only three or four hours.
A yellow warning for coastal conditions is also in force across the Balearic Islands, including Mallorca. Santa Eulària des Riu Town Hall has urged people to take extra care and follow instructions from authorities and emergency services.
Indoor venues must watch the weather
Activities in covered sports facilities may continue for now, but organisers must closely track the weather and put participants’ safety first.
For other adult activities, the responsible federation or club must at least move the event or temporarily stop it as conditions develop. All planned activities, competitions and training in natural areas have also been cancelled.
