Two Ibiza taxis face proceedings after inspectors find pre-agreed fares of 75 and 100 euros during an overnight check on 4 October. One taxi was travelling from a nightlife venue in Sant Josep de sa Talaia, Ibiza, to Sant Antoni de Portmany, Ibiza, with its meter switched off. Its driver had agreed a 75-euro fare; a second taxi had agreed 100 euros for a similar journey.

The Ibiza Island Council arranged the check after receiving indications that some taxis might be charging fares against the rules. It opened proceedings against both taxis based on the inspectors’ findings and statements from the affected passengers. The licence holders could each face a fine of 401 euros.

Island transport director Roberto Algaba said such cases were isolated but damaged the reputation of the wider taxi service. He urged licence holders to keep an eye on their drivers. The council was already devoting public money and staff to tackling illegal transport, he said, and now had to use resources to check a regulated service too.
