Mallorca court halts Ibiza teacher trial over five pupils
In Palma, Mallorca, the Provincial Court of the Balearic Islands halts an Ibiza schoolteacher’s trial before it begins on Wednesday, 14 October. Prosecutors accuse him of making sexual propositions to five underage pupils. They seek 17 years and three months in prison.
Why the trial stops
Before the hearing, the prosecutor asks to record a witness’s evidence in advance. The procedure is designed to let minors give their account once, without having to repeat it or appear at trial.
The teacher’s defence objects. The judges consider the request, grant it and suspend the trial.
What prosecutors allege
The allegations date from the 2020–2021 school year, when the accused taught Catalan at a secondary school on Ibiza. Prosecutors say he took a 16-year-old pupil out of class for conversations about sex and offered to take her to a house he owned on Mallorca. He allegedly told her that her response to his propositions would affect her grade: if she did as he asked, she would pass without studying. Prosecutors also say he exchanged compromising photographs with her on a social network and threatened to share them.
He allegedly took two other pupils, both 15, out of class to talk about sex. Prosecutors say he offered to have sex with them at his Mallorca house and told them they could pass his subject without taking all its exams. With two more pupils, aged 14 and 15, he allegedly asked for sexual photographs through social media and sent them pictures of himself.
The charges include offences involving minors, exhibitionism and coercion. Prosecutors also seek a €5,400 fine and a total of €32,000 in compensation for the five pupils.
