Ibiza names four tourist areas for €35m overhaul

Four parts of Eivissa municipality in Ibiza are being lined up for renewal under a plan worth more than €35 million. On 25 September, the Island Council of Ibiza designated the Old Town, Paseo Marítimo, Playa d'en Bossa and Talamanca as saturated tourism and redevelopment zones — official areas earmarked for renewal. The move allows hotels to modernise, but it cannot create any extra tourist beds.

The designation opens the way for public infrastructure work and measures to improve the management of mobility, water and the coast. First vice-president Mariano Juan said the agreement was built around improving quality rather than increasing numbers, managing movement better and cutting tourism's impacts.

Where the money could go

The redevelopment plan initially sets out more than €35 million in public and private action. It includes €6.9 million for infrastructure and accessibility, €1.5 million for sustainable mobility and €22 million for reshaping and improving urban areas.

Those figures are estimates, the council said. Individual projects, planning tools and future budgets must still set the final amounts.

The proposal follows a document drawn up by the council at the end of 2025 and a request from Eivissa Town Hall. It also answers calls from the hotel sector for ways to reinvest in areas and establishments needing modernisation.

Priority for renewal aid

The four zones will be treated as strategic areas when public grants for rehabilitating buildings and spaces are allocated. Tourism businesses within them can apply for the special modernisation scheme if they meet its conditions, with applications open until June 2029.

The council has also called on the Govern to develop a multi-year public investment programme with the council and Eivissa Town Hall. It says this is the first step in an island-wide process: papers from other municipalities are already under review, with further zone declarations expected before the end of 2026.
