Ibiza fire: man jailed for five years after evacuations
An Ibiza fire forces sleeping people out of a block of flats: the man who started it gets five years in prison. The blaze began at a vehicle hire business on the island of Ibiza at about 05.45 on 19 October 2024. The Balearic Islands Provincial Court says the man admitted setting the fire.
He was outside the business, where he usually slept, when he set light to a bundle of leaves and threw it onto the terrace. Fuel in numerous motorcycles helped the flames spread quickly. The fire reached a neighbouring bar and restaurant, then a two-storey residential building with several flats.
Emergency crews evacuated the people sleeping inside. Flames damaged the building’s façade and shared and private areas. The fire was out by 08.00.
The ruling is final. As well as the prison term, the man must pay a €360 fine and €471,260 in compensation. The court found that the fire endangered people’s lives and physical safety, and convicted him of three counts of minor injury.
