Ibiza villa row: no public access to stretch of coast
A stretch of coast on Ibiza in the Balearic Islands has no public access: a dispute over a cliffside villa and a possible concession reaches the Balearic parliament on Tuesday, 3 November. Balearic sea minister Juan Manuel Lafuente confirms the lack of access as Socialist MP Pilar Costa presses him on the villa.
Costa asks whether allowing people through the private villa only at restricted hours would count as public access to the coast. She says its owner has taken over public space in a cove and claims the Balearic government appears to be considering a concession for him.
Lafuente rejects the suggestion that the government awards concessions on a whim. He says decisions follow technical reports and coastal law, and that the case should continue through the usual administrative process. Ensuring public access is the Spanish government’s responsibility, he says, while any sanction is a matter for a ministry.
