Mallorca tourism: Iceland looks to learn from Balearics

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Mallorca’s tourism model catches Iceland’s eye: its ambassador to Spain, Kristján Andri Stefánsson, meets Balearic president Marga Prohens at the Consolat de Mar in Palma, Mallorca, on Friday, 16 October. He wants to explore whether the Balearic approach to “sustainable tourism” could work in Iceland.

Stefánsson calls Mallorca an “international benchmark” for tourism, with a model he describes as “solid and lasting”. Tourism growth came much later in Iceland, he says, and his country needs to learn from the Balearics.

The ambassador has also met Mallorca’s island council and the Mallorca Chamber of Commerce to exchange experiences. The talks will continue over the coming months, particularly at the International Tourism Fair (Fitur).
