Mallorca illegal lets: 146 cases, no closures

Mallorca has processed 146 cases over illegal holiday lets by July, yet no illegal tourist accommodation has been closed during this legislative term, the Socialist group on the island council says. Tourism councillor Guillem Ginard gave the figure on Tuesday, saying it was 40 per cent higher than for all of 2025. Socialist councillor Joana Maria Adrover said the cases mean little unless the letting activity actually stops.

Ginard said the Consell de Mallorca had issued 54 immediate stop orders. Adrover wants to know how many were followed and how many had to be enforced. She also said the council had carried out no precautionary closures, imposed no coercive fines and referred no cases to prosecutors.

Adrover compared the 54 orders with Palma mayor Jaime Martínez’s estimate of 15,000 illegal rental homes in Palma, Mallorca alone. She said complaints from residents had gone on for years while some properties continued operating.

Pressure grows over tourism plan

The Socialist councillor also attacked the outlook for Mallorca’s tourism plan. Ginard said he did not think a change to the Plan for Tourist Intervention Areas, known as PIAT, was likely during this term. The proposed change would cut the maximum number of tourist places on the island.

Adrover said Consell president Llorenç Galmés had committed to that reduction more than two years ago. She called it a contradiction to speak of limiting tourism pressure while visitor numbers continue to rise, and said Mallorca needs fewer illegal holiday lets in operation rather than more announced cases.
