On Mallorca, police seize more than 1,700 items intended for illegal street sales in s'Arenal and Cala Pi, in the municipality of Llucmajor, during summer checks. Llucmajor council announced the haul on Thursday, 1 October. Officers removed goods being sold without permission after drawing up reports and carrying out the required administrative steps.

The haul includes 1,251 pairs of sunglasses, 269 caps and 133 cup holders. Police also seized 80 litres of sangria, 30 bottles of alcoholic drinks, 20 sarongs, six parasols and four plastic chairs. Some of the goods were perishable. The council said selling them illegally could pose a food safety risk, and all the confiscated perishable goods were destroyed after checks.

The council says the checks aim to protect consumers and prevent unfair competition with authorised businesses. Street sellers need a municipal permit and must meet the rules for what they sell. Police stepped up checks over the summer where they found more unauthorised sales and say the checks will continue.
