Marratxí residents lose Palma sports discount

Some Marratxí residents on Mallorca have been unable to get the reduced rates for pools and gyms in Palma this year, MÉS per Marratxí says. The deal was meant to give them the same prices as people registered in Palma at facilities run by the Municipal Sports Institute, known as IME. Party spokeswoman Aina Amengual demanded answers from Marratxí Town Hall on 18 September 2026.

The agreement had applied since 1 April 2021, allowing Marratxí residents to use IME pools and gyms at Palma residents’ rates. Its initial term was four years, with automatic annual extensions possible for up to another four years.

Under the arrangement, Marratxí Town Hall was to cover the financial difference. MÉS says the council’s transparency portal still lists the IME agreement among those in force, while its sports website also says Marratxí residents can pay Palma rates.

Amengual said the issue was not about winning a new service but keeping an existing advantage. She asked why the council still advertises the agreement if residents can no longer receive the discount.

MÉS has linked the row to the planned metropolitan area announced in May by Palma mayor Jaime Martínez, bringing together Palma, Marratxí, Calvià and Llucmajor to improve coordination and public services.

Amengual urged Marratxí mayor Jaume Llompart and the Palma mayor to agree on keeping the deal. The party also pointed to Marratxí’s need for sports facilities, noting its 2023 proposal for a municipal sports hall on land opposite the petrol station on the Inca road.
