Mallorca’s two health-study sites are recruiting: nearly 1,500 people across the Balearic Islands have joined a project that will track their health for more than 20 years. The sites in Santa Ponça and Sa Pobla, on Mallorca, are taking on participants from rural and urban areas. The Balearic Islands Health Research Institute (IdISBa) reported the figures on 8 October 2026.

What taking part involves

The IMPaCT study selects participants at random. They fill in questionnaires and undergo physical examinations, physiological tests and biomarker analyses. People are currently joining from Calvià, Campanet, Búger, Pollença, Sa Pobla, Santa Margalida, Muro and Can Picafort.

Researchers will look at how lifestyle, diet, surroundings, social circumstances and genetics affect health. They hope the findings will shed light on conditions including cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and cardiovascular disease, and help improve prevention.

Following health over decades

Across Spain, nearly 45,000 people have joined so far, through 51 sites in every autonomous community. The study aims to follow 200,000 people for more than 20 years, allowing researchers to examine how health and habits change over time.

The Balearics were among four autonomous communities that began a pilot in March 2023. IdISBa coordinates the islands’ involvement, while primary care services in the Balearic health service, IBSalut, carry out the work. Oana Bulilete, the study’s lead researcher in the Balearics, says the long-term findings could help improve disease prevention and make medicine more personalised.
