In the Balearic Islands, 41% of firms registered as active show no activity: the official records and the picture on the ground do not match. Iberinform released the finding on Thursday, 15 October 2026. Its study looked at whether companies had published official company acts or filed annual accounts in recent years.

Across Spain, 1.9 million companies have done neither. That amounts to 46% of firms officially classed as active. The Balearic Islands’ rate is lower, but the gap remains stark. In the Canary Islands and Andalusia, the figure is 49%; in La Rioja, it is 31%.

There is another sign of a slowdown. The number of companies filing annual accounts for 2024 with Spain’s Commercial Registry was 6.6% below the 2021 peak. Filings have edged down since 2022, which Iberinform says could point to weakening momentum among Spanish businesses.
