Mallorca theatre row: Inca challenges director rules

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Inca Town Hall on Mallorca is moving towards legal action over the rules for choosing a new director of the Teatre Principal d'Inca. The Socialist Party of the Balearic Islands (PSIB) backs the move and accuses the People’s Party (PP) of trying to interfere with and control the selection process. The dispute emerged on 6 September.

The PSIB says the PP coordinated its approach through the Balearic Government, the Mallorca Island Council and its representatives in Inca. It argues that the choice of director should be handled on technical and legal grounds, not politically.

Socialist Mallorca Island Council member Joan Ferrer said it was hard to understand why the council had backed rules opposed by legal reports. He also said the vote went against the view of Inca Town Hall, which manages the theatre.

Ferrer accused the council of institutional disloyalty, claiming it leaked party-political matters to the media to damage the Teatre Principal d'Inca. He called on the council to stop political interference and respect municipal autonomy.
