Mallorca industrial estates: funding and faster decisions
Mallorca’s industrial estates could see faster decisions on businesses starting, changing or expanding industrial operations under rules approved by the Balearic government on Friday, 30 October. Councils granted strategic industrial status must handle the relevant procedures in half the legal time. In Palma, government spokesman Antoni Costa said the decree puts the Balearic industrial estates law into effect but does not approve a specific project.
Which councils can qualify
A municipality can seek strategic industrial status if it has at least one industrial area, or one going through the planning process. It must also have approved tax breaks for businesses already based there or moving in, and meet other requirements.
Recognition gives councils priority for public funds and dedicated support programmes. In cases allowed by grant rules, they may also receive aid without competing against other applicants.
What changes for industrial estates
The decree sets rules for groups that manage and improve industrial estates. They are intended to help those involved work together on infrastructure, services and maintenance. One type of group will work with its council through an agreement.
A public Balearic register will hold basic details of the groups, subject to personal data safeguards. A separate information system will record details of industrial areas, including their size, access and services. Quality checks will cover lighting, water, cleaning, telecommunications and transport, as well as how problems are handled and what businesses think of the estates.
