Menorca plans start-up hub for at least six firms

At least six industrial firms could get their own workspaces at the Llinàritx industrial estate in Es Mercadal, Menorca: the Balearic government gives the planned start-up hub special strategic status on Friday, 2 October. It is aimed mainly at industrial sole traders and new small manufacturers on the island. The Balearic Islands Regional Development Agency will develop and run it.

Workshops and help getting started

Each firm chosen for the hub would have an administrative area and a workshop or other space for production. It would also get help with its business plan, generally for no more than three years.

The building is planned to include shared space for training and presentations, offices, toilets, changing rooms and outdoor storage. Menorca has no comparable public centre for industrial businesses, according to the government.

What the government hopes to change

Putting workspaces, shared services and advice in one place is meant to lower the risk for young firms as they get established. Support would cover prototypes, testing, energy efficiency, digital tools, logistics and meeting industry rules.

The government wants the hub to bring more activity to Llinàritx and Es Mercadal. It also hopes firms in sectors including food production, boating, sustainable construction, fashion, footwear and metalworking will work together. It has not given an opening date.
