Mallorca election complaints target three Instagram posts
Mallorca’s island council faces three election complaints over Instagram posts: a coalition says the posts may breach rules requiring public bodies to remain neutral during a campaign. Ara Més-Front Ampli filed the complaints with the Balearic Provincial Electoral Board on 3 November. Two posts came from the council’s account; the third came from its president, Llorenç Galmés.
The three posts
In one, Galmés and Antònia Roca, the council’s first vice-president and councillor for Culture and Heritage, discuss planned visits by third-sector organisations and an occupational service to the Lonja and fishing quay in Palma, Mallorca.
Another features Galmés and Antoni Fuster, the island councillor for Presidency, explaining the ‘Estades per a la Gent Gran’ programme, said to have offered 2,000 places in 2026. The post on Galmés’s account concerns work on the bypass at Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, Mallorca. The work is intended to prevent another flood like the one that killed 13 people there in 2018.
Why the coalition objects
Ara Més-Front Ampli cites Article 50 of the electoral law. During the election period, it bars publicly organised and funded events that refer to parties’ campaigns, as well as ceremonies opening works, public services or projects. Those services and projects can still come into use.
The coalition argues that the posts breach the rule. It wants the electoral board to act as soon as possible to ensure the island council remains neutral.
