IS-linked posts urge attacks on police at Spain protests
Police and protesters in Spain are named as targets in online calls for attacks during demonstrations. Spain’s Ministry of the Interior said on 23 October 2026 that it had found the messages on a website linked to Islamic State (IS, also known as Daesh). Protests are taking place in several European countries, including Spain.
The ministry’s Cybersecurity Coordination Office says the messages urge attacks amid gatherings and street clashes. They name explosives, knives and vehicles as possible weapons.
The ministry says it continually monitors social media as part of its work against jihadism. The Cybersecurity Coordination Office, the Centre for Intelligence against Terrorism and Organised Crime, and state security forces take part. So far in 2026, the National Police and Civil Guard have carried out 47 operations in 23 provinces, leading to 86 arrests.
Spain has kept its enhanced level 4 terrorism alert in place since 17 October 2023. The government introduced it after jihadist attacks by Hamas and Israel’s subsequent military response escalated tensions in the Middle East.
