Mallorca Parliament presses for fairer island allowance

The Balearic Parliament in Palma is calling for a complete overhaul of the island allowance paid to state public-sector workers posted across the islands. The demand won approval on Wednesday in the Committee on Institutional and General Affairs after a motion tabled by PP deputy Cristina Gil. MPs say the payment must match the Balearics’ social and economic reality.

The committee also wants the Spanish government to put into effect the improved residence supplement already approved by the Council of Ministers. While it calls that rise “a step forward”, the Parliament says it does not amount to a lasting reform of the allowance for civil servants assigned to the Balearics.

It wants ministers to test whether the sums are enough using “objective and verifiable” measures of the extra cost of living and working on the islands. The review should also examine whether the allowance helps fill vacancies, curb staff turnover and keep workforces stable. The government should make changes if the payment is found not to be doing its job properly.

The same committee backed a separate Socialist motion, presented by deputy Teresa Suárez, supporting the government against possible external interference and defending democratic sovereignty. Parliament reaffirmed its commitment to international law, multilateralism and respect between states, and urged coordinated work with European Union institutions to strengthen democratic safeguards.

A Unidas Podemos motion on the Global Sumud Flotilla was rejected after votes against from PP and Vox. The proposal, presented by deputy José Maria García, had sought support for the flotilla’s solidarity action for Palestinians in Gaza, as well as social and legal help for Balearic participants and their families.
