Palma mayor Jaime Martínez gets mock prize for no dialogue

Palma Mayor Jaime Martínez is set to receive a mock prize on Saturday from MÉS per Palma, which says he has failed to talk and reach agreements with numerous groups in the city. The party will hand him the Sinofós award for “Palma at its most indignant” at CEIP Aina Moll.

The ceremony will also honour three groups whose campaigns, MÉS says, have helped make Palma greener, fairer and more committed to democratic values. The party says all three share the demand to be heard, accusing Palma City Council of responding with imposition and faits accomplis.

Awards for early-years education and trees

The Assemblea 0-3 anys will be recognised for campaigning for a public network for children in their first years of life that is large enough, accessible and of good quality. MÉS says the group has pushed early-years education up the political agenda as a way to improve equal opportunities, reduce inequality and help families balance responsibilities.

The Calatrava neighbourhood association will receive the second award for defending the area’s trees. MÉS says the campaign emerged after what it calls the unjustified destruction and felling of trees by the PP in Cort, and argues that protecting mature trees safeguards shade, biodiversity, health and quality of life as temperatures rise.

GESA waterfront project also in spotlight

A third award goes to the Ses Veles neighbourhood association for defending Palma’s waterfront and opposing the GESA project promoted by Palma City Council. MÉS praises the group’s persistence in demanding that the scheme is not decided without public involvement.

The party says GESA’s future affects the landscape, heritage and Palma’s model of city, and should be decided through transparency, public debate and participation.
