Palma Diada revives Jaume II coronation 750 years on

Mallorca marked its Diada on Saturday with a staged coronation of King Jaume II at Santa Eulàlia church in Palma, followed by flowers at his tomb in Mallorca Cathedral. The recreation recalled 750 years since the death of his father, Jaume I, and Jaume II’s accession. Nearly 800 people attended the religious service at the cathedral.

The Consell de Mallorca said Jaume II swore the Carta de Privilegis i Franqueses at Santa Eulàlia on 12 September 750 years ago. It said the event led to the Crown of Mallorca and remains part of the island’s institutional, cultural and political identity.

From Santa Eulàlia to the cathedral

After the coronation scene, the procession travelled to the cathedral for the floral tribute. Balearic Government president Marga Prohens and Parliament president Gabriel Le Senne joined the group.

Solemn melodies accompanied the route, along with the Consell de Mallorca’s giant figures, xeremiers musicians and dancers from the Escola de Música i Danses de Mallorca. Cathedral dean Antoni Vera received the group, while mayors, municipal representatives, associations and organisations from across Mallorca were among those inside.

Flowers at Jaume II’s tomb

The Capella de la Seu performed Mallorca’s anthem, La Balanguera. Its musical version reaches 100 years in 2026, and Consell president Llorenç Galmés called it a symbol of Mallorcan identity.

The island’s leading institutional representatives then laid flowers at Jaume II’s tomb in the Chapel of the Holy Trinity. Members of the public were afterwards able to leave flowers on the steps of the high altar.
