Ibiza rescuers test airlift after jet ski crash

A snorkeller injured in a jet ski collision is hauled from the water and prepared for a helicopter evacuation in a rescue drill off Cala Salada and Cala Saladeta on Ibiza. Sant Antoni de Portmany staged the exercise on Tuesday, 8 September, in its first general emergency test for the municipality’s beaches. The scenario placed the snorkeller outside the marked bathing area, with a trauma needing immediate care.

The beach safety and rescue team first located and treated the casualty. A rescue boat was then called in to recover the person from the sea and secure them on a spine board.

Helicopter and rescue boat join the drill

Spain’s Maritime Rescue service sent a helicopter, while the Red Cross deployed its LS Hidra boat. The Emergency Service 112 also took part, with Sant Antoni de Portmany Town Hall coordinating the operation.

The final stage rehearsed the helicopter evacuation, bringing together beach rescuers, maritime crews, the Red Cross, the air crew and 112.

Test of communication under pressure

Teams checked how lifeguards and boat skippers communicate during a serious water emergency. They also practised first treatment, stabilising the casualty and the coordination needed for an airlift.

The town hall said the exercise was designed to strengthen emergency procedures, identify points for improvement and sharpen the response to complex incidents along the coast.
