Palma neighbours push to reopen Joan Crespí centre

Palma neighbours are pressing to reopen the Joan Crespí centre for people with disabilities. On Wednesday 23 September, groups from Santa Catalina and Es Jonquet will meet the Balearic government to discuss a plan for the site. They want a nearby service offering physiotherapy, rehabilitation and occupational therapy.

The Barri Cívic de Santa Catalina i Es Jonquet association says hundreds of signatures collected in May back the call. Sandra Fernández, the minister responsible for families, social welfare and dependency care, has called the meeting.

Call for care closer to home

The association and the Health Commission of Santa Catalina and Es Jonquet want the centre to support people with long-term illnesses as well as those with acute conditions. They also say it should meet other social needs in the neighbourhood.

Senior representatives from the ministry’s Directorate General, the Social and Health Consortium, the IbSalut health service and Palma City Council are expected to attend.

Neighbours seek a say in redesign

The groups want the centre linked closely to the Santa Catalina Health Centre. Its current rooms and resources are severely limited, they say, despite high demand for care in the area.

Neighbourhood representatives also want to take an active role from the start in plans to adapt the centre’s ground floor. They say future users and local residents should be able to put forward their proposals directly.
