Palma neighbours push Joan Crespí therapy centre reopening

Palma neighbourhood groups want the Joan Crespí centre to reopen as a local therapy and rehabilitation service. They meet the Balearic government on Wednesday, 23 September 2026, to discuss plans for the Palma facility, which cares for people with disabilities. Their campaign is backed by hundreds of signatures collected in May.

Sandra Fernández, the minister responsible for families, called the meeting. Senior officials from the department, the Sociosanitary Consortium, the Balearic Health Service IbSalut and Palma City Council are expected to attend.

Therapy and rehabilitation close to home

The Barri Cívic association and the Santa Catalina and Es Jonquet health committee want Joan Crespí to operate as a nearby centre. They are calling for physiotherapy, rehabilitation and occupational therapy, as well as support for people with chronic illnesses and acute conditions.

The groups also want the centre to cover other social needs in the area. They say it must be closely linked to Santa Catalina Health Centre, whose space and resources are too limited to cope with local demand.

Neighbours seek a role in redesign

The neighbourhood representatives want to take an active part in adapting the centre’s ground floor. They are asking to put forward their own ideas from the first stage of the design, as future users and local residents.
