The 2020 world champion has already missed the races in Austria, Japan and Indonesia. Symptoms he has had for several months have worsened, leaving him unable to compete for more than a month. No more specific official explanation for his absence has been given.

Honda's test rider Aleix Espargaró is also not travelling to Australia. He withdrew voluntarily from the Indonesian Grand Prix and developed a long-term exercise-related condition called compartment syndrome during private testing at the Sepang International Circuit. Honda says he will have surgery in Barcelona in the coming days and will not be replaced, leaving Marini as its sole rider at Phillip Island.
