Menorca schools teach job interviews as firms seek staff

In Ciutadella, Menorca, pupils are set to practise job interviews this week as island businesses struggle to recruit young people. The workshop at Maria Àngels Cardona secondary school will also cover ways to look for work, according to the business association Pime Menorca. It is the second session in the association’s Future Makers programme, which began on 28 October with a workshop on starting a business at Biel Martí secondary school.

Why firms are going into schools

Pime Menorca represents more than 2,200 businesses. It says firms are finding it increasingly hard to bring young people into some trades and to replace professionals nearing the end of their careers. Electrical work, plumbing and carpentry are among the affected trades. Businesses in industry, construction, crafts and food production face the problem too.

Future Makers aims to show pupils the jobs and businesses on their own island before they choose what to study or which work to pursue. Employers and professionals will visit schools to explain what they do and the skills they need. Pupils will also be able to visit workshops, industrial businesses and other workplaces.

More schools and visits to come

Schools can choose the activities that suit their pupils. During the 2026–2027 school year, the programme is set to include further workshops, discussions with business owners and workplace visits. Joan Ramis i Ramis secondary school, the Escola d’Art, the CEPA Pilar Benejam adult education centre and La Salle de Alaior are among the schools planning activities, alongside the two hosting the first workshops.

The programme initially focuses on pupils nearing the end of compulsory education, as well as those in upper secondary and vocational education. It also includes adult education. More schools are expected to join, with activities for younger pupils planned for later school years.
