Spain hits jobs record but unemployment rises by 95,900
Spain has more people in work than ever, but unemployment rises by 95,900 in the third quarter. The figures, published on Tuesday, 27 October, show 22,852,600 people working across the country. Deputy prime minister and labour minister Yolanda Díaz says the two trends can happen together because more people are active in the labour market.
Why the jobless total rose
The number of people in work grew by 73,600 from the previous quarter, according to Spain’s Labour Force Survey (EPA). But the active population — people working or seeking work — grew by 169,500 to a record 25,443,800.
That leaves 2,591,200 people unemployed, up 95,900 on the quarter. The unemployment rate stands at 10.18%. Compared with the same period last year, however, the number of unemployed people is down by 21,900.
More permanent jobs
In a post on Bluesky, Díaz said employment had grown by 465,500 over the past 12 months, with one in four of those jobs taken by someone under 25. The number of employees on permanent contracts rose by 22,100 in the quarter to more than 16.6 million.
More than 10.6 million women are now in work, also a record. Díaz called the employment figures a sign that government policies are working, while saying the government is not satisfied yet.
