Son Banya cocaine trial: six face 65 years

Six people go on trial in Palma on Monday at 09.30 over five kilos of cocaine allegedly brought into Son Banya. The Second Section of the Provincial Court of the Balearic Islands will hear the case. Prosecutors are seeking prison terms totalling 65 years and fines of up to €7.8 million.

The main defendant faces 16 years and six months in prison, a €1.3 million fine and €3,087 in compensation. She is the wife of Ico and daughter-in-law of Paca, both described in the case as known drug traffickers in the settlement. The prosecution accuses her of drug trafficking, belonging to a criminal organisation, assaulting officers and road-safety offences.

Four other defendants each face nine years and six months in prison and a €1.3 million fine. Prosecutors want a sentence of ten years and six months, plus the same fine, for the sixth defendant because of a previous conviction. The hearing had been due to take place in April but was postponed until September.

According to the prosecution, the main defendant regularly brought large quantities of cocaine into Son Banya and collected drug money between June and November 2024. She lived in Alicante but had family connections to the settlement.

The woman allegedly drove to Son Banya several times despite never having held a driving licence. National Police monitoring her learned that the other defendants, some said to be relatives, had travelled from Alicante to Palma for a major cocaine handover.

Five packages, each weighing about one kilo, were involved, prosecutors say. Four were handed to the main defendant in a bag bearing the Real Madrid crest, while the group kept the fifth.

Police then blocked her route after spotting the exchange. The prosecution says she drove at officers at high speed, then struck a Guardia Civil patrol that was also trying to stop her escape.

After further attempts to get away and a warning shot fired into the air, officers stopped the car. They allegedly found the bag containing four cocaine packages weighing just over four kilos and valued at more than €400,000.

The other defendants were also arrested. Several were in a van, while one was found in a hotel room in s'Arenal, Llucmajor, where investigators say the fifth package was hidden in a false ceiling.
