Formentera’s La Mola lighthouse drops off visitor list

Four heritage sites become two on the visitor notice for the island of Formentera: La Mola lighthouse is no longer listed. On Thursday, 5 November 2026, Gent per Formentera called on Sa Unió’s island government to reopen it and set regular visiting hours for other heritage sites.

The tower disappeared first

In September 2024, the notice listed the ethnographic collection, La Mola lighthouse, the Old Mill of La Mola and the Pi des Català tower, according to Gent per Formentera. A year later, the tower had lost its listed visiting hours. Now only the collection and the mill appear.

The party had asked for fixed hours at the tower in July 2025, and its proposal passed unanimously. Months later, visits were available only on request. Gent per Formentera submitted another proposal calling for the agreement to be put into effect.

Why the lighthouse remains off the list

At an October 2026 council meeting, the party pressed for the lighthouse to stay open as a cultural site. The island government said staffing was the main obstacle: the person hired to open it had a summer-season contract. It was working on a rota with an island council employee.

The government also said limited works were needed. The councillor responsible expected the lighthouse to reopen within weeks, but it remains absent from the visitor notice. Gent per Formentera says the closure is particularly serious because public money went into renovating the building and the island council holds a concession for it from the Port Authority.
