Holiday lets face scrutiny at La Palma housing talks
Holiday lets are on the agenda on La Palma in the Canary Islands: Spain’s national ombudsman, Ángel Gabilondo, and his regional counterparts meet there on 29 and 30 October to examine access to housing. They will look at how social and subsidised homes are allocated, help with rent and rules for holiday lets.
The Office of the Spanish Ombudsman says the talks will also cover the designation of areas with strained housing markets. Other subjects include alternatives for people facing eviction, a shared system for public housing data and shanty settlements that lack minimum living conditions.
The ombudsmen meet on Wednesday 28 October at the Roque de los Muchachos visitor centre to begin shaping a statement for the gathering. Seven discussion panels will then bring together academics, social workers, housing campaigners, architects and public administration representatives. Ten minors representing ombudsman offices in Andalusia, the Canary Islands, Catalonia and the Basque Country will also attend. The conclusions will be published after the talks.
