40 years on: UIB opens Balearic language law show

A new travelling exhibition in Palma traces 40 years of the Balearic language law and its impact on society. The University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) opened the show on Monday, 21 September 2026, in the vestibule of its Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos building. It will move between several UIB buildings throughout the academic year.

What the exhibition examines

The display follows the areas in which the law on language normalisation has had a significant social effect over four decades. It also looks at the main changes it has prompted in the process of normalising the Catalan language, the UIB said.

The Department of Catalan Philology and General Linguistics and the Language Policy Commission have led the project. The UIB's Vice-Rectorate for Social and Cultural Outreach is supporting it.

A show for the university community

The exhibition is aimed at the whole university community. Eloi Bellés and Pilar Gamundí curated it, with scientific advice from Maria Ballester and Rosa Calafat.

Culture director general Llorenç Perelló, UIB Vice-Rector Adrià Muntaner and curator Eloi Bellés attended the opening in Palma.
