Formentera concert marks European Day of Languages

A string quartet from the Balearic Symphony Orchestra and mezzo-soprano Laura de la Fuente will lead Formentera’s European Day of Languages event on Tuesday, 22 September. The concert starts at 20.00 in the Sala de Cultura in Sant Francesc de Formentera.

Smerald Spahiu and Paula Marquès will play violin, with Raquel Cobo on viola and Lucrecia Garrigues on cello. The programme is intended to promote linguistic diversity.

The Government of the Balearic Islands is staging the event through the Institut d’Estudis Baleàrics and the Directorate-General for Institutional Relations and Relations with Parliament, alongside the Council of Formentera.

The Council of Europe and the European Union promoted the European Day of Languages in 2021 to encourage language learning and celebrate linguistic diversity. The date is marked on 26 September to highlight Europe’s languages and foster intercultural understanding.

Formentera was chosen because the Balearic Symphony Orchestra has not performed on the island since 2024. Culture, Tourism and Sports Minister Jaume Bauzá is expected to attend. He said the concert reflects the government’s commitment to protecting and promoting Catalan, while making classical music available across the archipelago.
