Mallorca's left unites for 29 November Senate vote
On Mallorca in the Balearic Islands, left-wing parties unite for the 29 November Senate vote: if their alliance wins two seats, one senator will give up his place halfway through the term.
The alliance, Acord de Progrés per Mallorca, presented its candidates on 1 November. Socialist Catalina Cladera leads the bid alongside university lecturer Francisco González of Esquerra Unida. If they win two seats, González would serve for the first half of the term before handing his place to Rosa Cursach of MÉS per Mallorca, who is listed as a substitute candidate.
Cladera says the parties have joined forces to counter what she sees as a coordinated right and far right. She wants them to defend housing, pensions and public services, among other issues. González says the bid must also offer answers to Mallorca’s challenges and improve people’s living conditions.
Cursach says MÉS brings a focus on women’s rights, the island’s language and fair funding for the Balearic Islands. The alliance is urging progressive voters on Mallorca to take part in the Senate election.
