Mallorca dog shelter gave dogs legionella water, union says

On Mallorca, dogs at the Son Reus municipal shelter in Palma were given water from a supply containing legionella all summer, the UGT union alleges. On Tuesday, 29 September, it said the problems it had reported were ongoing and documented, not isolated incidents. Palma City Council denies the allegations and says inspections by various authorities over the past seven months have all returned favourable results.

Dead animals and a broken fridge

UGT said last Friday that it had filed a complaint alleging that decomposing animal bodies were stored in a broken fridge at the shelter. It also says live and dead animals were regularly transported together until it made its allegations public.

The union says it has records of the refrigeration fault. It argues that photographs presented by the council show work carried out later and do not disprove the conditions it had documented.

Dispute spreads to workers

UGT says it has withheld further photographs to protect shelter staff from possible pressure or administrative action. It also says a disciplinary case has been opened against its union representative after the council contacted Athisa, the company that accuses him of leaking photographs.

The union has criticised the use of outside strike-breakers during a strike. It is calling on animal welfare groups to join its demands for political accountability, better working conditions and a service that meets hygiene requirements.
