Palma’s first Library of Things opens with 20 items

Palma’s first Library of Things has opened in Pere Garau, with 20 occasional-use items selected for its free lending scheme. Families will be able to borrow items instead of buying them when loans begin within three weeks, the project’s promoters say. The neighbourhood association Pere Garau Saludable presented the scheme on Friday.

The project is known locally as an objetoteca — a library of things — and is designed for objects used only a few times a year. The selection includes DIY tools, equipment for home repairs and items for cultural activities.

Pere Garau Sostenible chose the 20 items with three other organisations. Residents, shops and organisations are being invited to donate objects that are in good condition.

The scheme aims to cut waste and excessive consumption while encouraging reuse, savings and more sustainable habits. It also plans to become a place where local people can meet, work together and take part.

Its website is already prepared. Alongside lending, the Library of Things plans activities on repairs, recycling, sharing knowledge and sustainability.
