On Mallorca, a badly injured leg does not always have to be amputated: surgeons from across Spain meet at Son Espases University Hospital in Palma on Friday, 6 November, to discuss operations that can preserve limbs. The hospital is hosting the ninth conference on reconstructive microsurgery for arms and legs, organised by the Spanish Association of Microsurgery.

The programme covers reattaching severed limbs, restoring blood flow and repairing nerves. Surgeons will also discuss sarcomas, operations combining bone and plastic surgery, and microsurgery used to treat lymphoedema. Specialists from hospitals across Spain will compare their experience and results, the Balearic health department says.

A talk by surgeon Pedro Cavadas will focus on severe leg injuries. Microsurgery can play a key part in keeping a limb working and avoiding amputation in such cases. Jaume Estrada, head of plastic surgery at Son Espases, will chair the talk.

The discussions bring surgeons’ work on complex injuries and cancer-related conditions to Palma. According to the health department, advances in reconstructive microsurgery have improved results and helped preserve both limbs and essential functions.
