Mallorca's Llevant train sparks row over three lost years

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Mallorca’s Llevant train project is at the centre of a row over three lost years: the PSIB says the Balearic government has shelved it, while a minister insists it has not been forgotten. Socialist MP Ares Fernández makes the accusation in the Balearic Parliament in Palma, Mallorca, on Tuesday, 27 October 2026. José Luis Mateo, the minister for Housing, Territory and Mobility, rejects it.

Fernández says the previous governing coalition had already completed several administrative steps. Mateo says the government remains committed to the projects in its mobility plan, but has priorities.

In the coming months, the government will commission work on a mobility study backed by five million euros from the sustainable tourism tax, Mateo says. He also criticises Spain’s transport minister, Óscar Puente, for not inviting him to discuss a new rail agreement that could provide state funding for Balearic projects.
