Mallorca rubbish row puts Llucmajor waste fees in focus
In Llucmajor, Mallorca, problems with rubbish collection and questions over waste fees are driving a call for a public debate. On Wednesday, 30 September, the local Socialists said they had filed a proposal for the council to hold a debate on the state of the municipality every year. They want Mayor Xisca Lascolas to put it before the council at its September meeting.
Rubbish collection and projects under scrutiny
The debate would require the council leadership to explain its projects and how it manages Llucmajor’s different districts. The Socialist Party (PSOE) says the governing team has voted against similar proposals during this council term. It also wants an immediate meeting of party spokespeople to set a date and rules for the debate.
Socialist spokesman Jaume Oliver pointed to problems with rubbish collection. He also listed a care home awaiting construction for eight years, the neglect of Cas Coix since 2019, the music school’s temporary buildings and a lack of renovation at out-of-hours healthcare centres.
Budget forecasts raise fee questions
The PSOE says the debate matters ahead of the next council budget. Its figures forecast roughly 9.4 per cent more income from fees, including the waste fee. Oliver stressed that this does not mean the waste fee itself will rise by 9.4 per cent. He wants the council to say whether it plans an increase and what people would have to pay.
The party also points to forecast increases in income from several local taxes: 93 per cent from the tax on construction and building works, 13 per cent from tax on gains in property value, nearly seven per cent from vehicle tax and four per cent from property tax. Those forecasts do not show what any individual tax bill will be.
