Mallorca hosts around 130 scientists from 17 countries in Cala Rajada from 11 to 16 October to study lobsters and other large crustaceans. The Mediterranean’s invasive blue crab also gets a session of its own. The Spanish Institute of Oceanography announced the programme on Thursday.

Lobsters, disease and the blue crab

Researchers will discuss how large decapods — crustaceans such as red spiny lobsters and lobsters — behave, where they live and how they can be protected. Other work covers aquaculture, the production of young crustaceans, ocean processes and climate change. After the opening, Professor Jeff Shields will speak about diseases in crabs and lobsters.

Thursday’s blue crab session will cover the species’ genetics, growth, diseases and fisheries, among other topics.

Fishers join the discussion

On Wednesday, small-scale fishers, producer organisations, fisheries managers and scientists from around the world will exchange experiences. Their aim is to improve how fisheries for large crustaceans are managed, marketed and certified. The congress ends on Friday 16 October.
