Mallorca lobster conference draws over 130 experts
Mallorca hosts more than 130 scientists, fishing-sector representatives and public officials in Cala Rajada for talks on conserving lobsters and other large crustaceans. The international conference at the Centre Cultural Cap Vermell began on Monday and runs until Friday. Participants come from local, national and international organisations.
The Spanish Institute of Oceanography says participants have shared findings on where the animals live, how they behave and how they can be conserved. The programme covers red spiny lobsters, clawed lobsters and slipper lobsters, with further research presentations still to come.
One session brings small-scale fishers, producer organisations, fisheries managers and scientists from around the world together to discuss how to manage, market and certify these fisheries. Another focuses on the blue crab. It is considered non-native to the Mediterranean and is being studied in Europe and elsewhere.
