Mallorca police pool fills 88 posts, average wait five days
Figures released on 16 September show councils on Mallorca in the Balearic Islands have filled 88 local police posts through a central hiring list since 2024. From a council’s request to filling a post, the average wait is five calendar days. The Balearic School of Public Administration runs the list for town halls needing staff quickly.
Of 102 posts handled on Mallorca, 10 are still waiting to be filled and four fall under other situations set out in the scheme’s rules. Across Mallorca, Menorca and Eivissa, 35 councils have submitted 116 requests: 101 posts have been filled and 11 remain open.
Mallorca accounts for most posts
Alcúdia has filled the most posts on Mallorca, with 13. Muro follows with nine, while Santanyí has filled seven, Santa Margalida six and Sa Pobla five.
Menorca has handled six posts. Five were requested and filled in 2025 — two each in Ferreries and Maó, and one in Es Castell — while one Ferreries post remains open in 2026.
Eivissa has filled all eight posts handled through the list: three in 2024 and five in 2025. Santa Eulària des Riu and Sant Antoni de Portmany each received three, while Sant Joan de Labritja and Sant Josep de sa Talaia received one each.
How the hiring list works
The scheme mainly serves people who passed the examination stage for local police recruitment but did not secure a post in selection processes with exams held since 1 January 2021. Applicants choose one island, and their place on the list depends on their mark in the basic local police training course.
When a council reports a vacancy, the school offers it in that order. Candidates normally have 24 hours to reply; where several posts are offered at once, they have two working days. If there are not enough available candidates, priority mainly goes to the council with the lowest number of police officers per 1,000 inhabitants.
The list was created on 8 January 2024 and lasts for three years, with an extension possible for urgent need. Each temporary appointment can run for no more than three years.
