Palma study: LTBI+ women face lifelong violence
Palma, Mallorca: LTBI+ women face violence throughout their lives, in different settings and from different people, a study presented on Thursday, 5 November, finds. The research, described as the first of its kind in Spain, was carried out by Ben Amics, the Spanish LGBTI+ federation Felgtbi+ and the DiViSAR team at the Complutense University of Madrid.
The researchers say the attacks are not isolated. They describe a chain of violence that changes across a woman’s life, as sexism combines with hostility towards LTBI+ women and other forms of hate.
In personal relationships, the study says, violence is used to control and punish. In community settings, it pushes women out of safe spaces. At an institutional level, the researchers point to medical treatment that casts them as ill and public policies they say allow a lack of accountability to persist.
Palma is the first city chosen to present the study. Ben Amics says it aims to break the silence around this violence. The researchers also find that LTBI+ women develop their own ways to resist it, often together.
