Seven vehicles are involved in the crash, which blocks the motorway’s middle and right-hand lanes. Traffic backs up for up to four kilometres.

SAMU 061 takes the five injured people to Son Espases, Son Llàtzer and Juaneda hospitals. Two have less serious injuries and three are lightly injured. Another 12 people receive medical attention at the scene and are discharged there.

Guardia Civil traffic officers open an investigation into the multi-vehicle collision. They give the lorry driver a breath alcohol test after seeing clear signs that he may be under the influence of alcohol.

Sources close to the investigation say one possible cause is that the man lost control of the vehicle because of his condition. Traffic returns to normal after emergency crews finish their work and the vehicles are removed, according to Spain’s traffic authority.
