Madrid eviction puts housing protection to the vote
Maricarmen has lost her home in Madrid, Spain: the housing minister is pressing Congress to back new protection against evictions. On Tuesday, 29 September, Isabel Rodríguez said the government had reached a new agreement after talks with parliamentary groups. She wants Congress to ratify an eviction decree at a special sitting on Friday.
Rodríguez said she still favours the protection plan she sent to parliamentary groups in July. The Ministry of Housing drew up that proposal with the United Nations special rapporteur, but negotiations changed the wording. She said the revised text could help prevent another case like Maricarmen’s.
The government put the new text before the cabinet on Tuesday. Rodríguez urged parliamentary groups to support both of its housing decrees when Congress meets on Friday.
