Mallorca: PSIB seeks rent cap after Madrid eviction

Mallorca is where the PSIB is pressing for a rent cap: the Balearic Socialist party wants Maricarmen’s eviction in Madrid to mark a turning point in housing policy across the islands. In Palma, Mallorca, on Monday, 28 September, deputy leader Rosario Sánchez made the call after meeting the Platform for People Affected by Mortgages (PAH). Maricarmen is an elderly woman who has lost her home.

The PAH told Sánchez that others across the Balearic Islands face eviction. It also described workers who feel forced to leave the islands and pensioners whose income does not cover the high cost of housing.

Sánchez accused the Balearic government of allowing speculation to continue. She said Spain’s housing law allows rents to be capped, while Balearic law allows empty homes owned by large landlords to be expropriated and let as social housing.

She also pointed to Palma City Council’s anti-eviction office, which the incoming conservative People’s Party administration closed at the start of its term. Sánchez pledged to limit rent rises, but gave no indication that the regional government would use either of the powers she cited.
